DONE WITH PERFECTION

From youth I was always taught and was told
become someone of name before you get old
and that I should read, learn, practice and train
being the best at everything is the path to gain

find your strengths and find your profession too
being the best in school, is truly the best for you
adopt the perfect manners for your perfect life
and choose the prettiest woman to be your wife

have children, a house and fine cars outside
you assume this ego but yourself you hide
years later you are given one more chance
after cancer and rehab at your soul you glance

call it spiritual awakening, call it what you will
after decades away I finally found my new will
for what calls to me most in these days ahead
being content, not perfect, being free of dread

the expectations of my youth now hold no sway
I will be doing things now in a new kind of way
no more proving my worth with a constant show
I am me, I am free, to a brand new destiny I go.
